• Idiopathic gynaecomastia is the most common, which means there is no known cause. For gynaecomastia that is benign, and does not resolve on its own, treatment is usually straightforward with surgery.
• Physiological gynaecomastia happens to patients during their infancy, teenage years or old age. Due to a periodic hormonal surge, the condition is usually temporary.
• Pharmacological causes include the consumption of certain drugs including anabolic steroids, anti-ulcer medication or heart medication. Treatment includes switching to alternative medications, if possible.
• Pathological gynaecomastia may be a result of certain hormone-producing tumours. Treatment for this rare group of patients involves treating the underlying cause.

gynaecomastia is a condition that is distinct from obesity. Despite maintaining a healthy weight, most cases of gynaecomastia cannot be resolved with mere weight loss and exercise. In fact, as the excess glandular tissue is no longer surrounded by extra fatty tissue, at times gynaecomastia may appear more prominent after weight loss.
